Various research studies offer information about the dangers of using cell phones while driving-dialing, texting, or talking on a handheld or hands-free cell phone. The attorneys at Gardner & Rans P.C. have found that in many cases, cell phone use is a major contributing cause of motor vehicle accidents.

The National Safety Council offers many articles that provide research and statistics about distracted driving. Cell phone use has been identified in article after article as a dangerous distraction for drivers. Some interesting facts include:

  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that at any given time of day, approximately nine percent of drivers are using cell phones;
  • A simulated driving study showed that drivers using cell phones exhibited greater driving impairment than intoxicated drivers;
  • A simulated driving study comparing passenger and cell phone conversations found that cell phone conversations were more demanding and distracting than a conversation with a passenger;
  • NHTSA reported that the percentage of drivers who text messaged or used hand-held devices while driving increased from .6% in 2009 to .9% in 2010;
  • NHTSA reported that the percentage of drivers using visible headsets increased from .6% in 2009 to .9% in 2010; and
  • The National Transportation Safety Board recommended in 2011 that all 50 states and Washington D.C. ban portable electronic devices for all drivers, including hands-free devices.
