The inherent risks that accompany driving privileges can expose anyone to danger, even if you are the safest driver on the road. You may find that driving around big trucks can be extra disconcerting because of their luminous size and ability to cause extreme destruction and harm in an accident. At Gardner & Rans P.C., we are familiar with the complications of truck accidents in Indiana.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, there are several precautions you should take when driving near a big truck to keep yourself safe. These include the following:

  • Leave plenty of space: While you may think you have just enough space to squeeze in front of a big rig on the highway, doing so can have dangerous consequences. Statistics show that large commercial vehicles take as much as 40 percent longer to stop than an average car. While you may think you have enough room, a trucker may be unable to successfully stop or slow to accommodate you.
  • Leave room for trucks to turn: Did you know that trucks have an exceptionally large turning radius at nearly 55 feet? If a truck is approaching you on a turn, be sure to leave plenty of space for them to complete their turn before you approach the intersection.
  • Beware of blind spots: A trucker’s view is completely obstructed in certain areas due to the shape, size and length of his or her vehicle. If possible, avoid driving immediately in front of, behind or to the sides of a truck where it could be a lot harder to spot your vehicle.

By staying alert, passing safely, never driving under the influence and following the other tips listed above, you can drive safely around big trucks. For more information about accidents involving a truck, visit our web page.
