A traumatic brain injury can have a devastating impact on both victims as well as their loved ones. Accordingly, families in Indiana must know what signs and symptoms to look for in the event of a significant head injury. Swift action is crucial to mitigate damage as much as possible, as well as prevent even more harmful effects from occurring.

According to the Mayo Clinic, the symptoms of a brain injury can vary depending on whether it is considered mild or moderate to severe. More serious brain injuries will cause a range of physical symptoms, including irregularly dilated pupils, seizures, impaired coordination, continual or worsening headaches and many other effects. In most cases, if a moderate to severe injury is suspected the best course of action is to receive medical attention as soon as possible.

While mild injuries result in less significant effects, they can still be highly damaging. Problems with vision and hearing can occur, as can mental impairments. Victims of head injuries may develop depressive-like symptoms or experience anxiety. Problems with memory can also occur, as can rapid changes in mood.

The Defense Centers of Excellence also urge parents to be aware of the signs of head injury in children, which can sometimes manifest differently. Children may become highly irritable after an injury occurs, or experience excessive bouts of crying without apparent cause. Kids might also appear uninterested in beloved hobbies or other activities, or even express little interest in eating. Because it can be difficult to determine the level of damage in children after a traumatic brain injury, it’s important to undergo a medical assessment immediately.
